Entertainers who returned to school after hitting limelight

A veteran fuji singer, Saheed Osupa, recently bagged a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science. Over the years, some other entertainers have also gone back to school after they hit the limelight. OGHENOVO EGODO-MICHAEL takes a look at some of these entertainers who furthered their education even after achieving success in their respective fields

Saheed Osupa

Akorede Okunola, aka Saheed Osupa, earned the admiration of many when he graduated with a Second Class Honour (Upper Division) in Political Science from the University of Ibadan, Oyo State.

Taking to his Instagram to share his excitement about being a graduate, Osupa wrote, “The public should be aware that, I, King (Dr) Saheed Osupa Akorede, am now a graduate of the prestigious University Of Ibadan, Class of ‘21.”

He had earlier obtained a National Diploma in Business Administration from The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Osupa started his career as a fuji music artiste in 1983, and has churned out several hit albums, such as ‘Fuji Fadisco’, ‘Ovation’, ‘Hot Shot’, ‘Big Daddy’, ‘Champion’, ‘Endorsement’, ‘New Dawn’, ‘Pacesetter’, ‘Lord of Music’ and ‘Fuji Icon’.

He has also acted in several movies, including ‘Eni Eleni’, ‘Ose Maami’, ‘Iku Oba’, ‘Ashiru Ejire’, ‘Igba Iwase’, ‘Ese Mefa Laye’, and ‘Ero Sese Koowe’.

Kanayo O Kanayo

Kanayo Kanayo had been in the movie industry for decades, and was already known for many successful films when he decided to go back to the university to pursue his long-time dream of becoming a lawyer.

He then enrolled in the University of Abuja. Upon graduation, he attended the Nigerian Law School and was called to the Bar on September 15, 2020.

Taking to his Instagram to share his graduation post, Kanayo wrote, “Don’t you ever give up on anything you want to become. I had always wanted to study law since my first degree in the early 1990s.”

He bagged his first degree in Philosophy from the University of Lagos.


Award-winning afrobeats singer, David Adeleke, aka Davido, graduated from Babcock University in 2015, with a Bachelor’s degree in Music (Second Class Upper). He then proceeded for the National Youth Service Corps in 2018.null

Prior to attending Babcock, Davido had enrolled in Oakwood University, Alabama, United States of America, to study Business Administration, but he dropped out to pursue his music career.

He rose to fame after releasing ‘Dami Duro’, the second single off his debut album titled, ‘Omo Baba Olowo’, which was released in 2012.

He was recently nominated for the prestigious Grammy Awards, and has had several hit songs such as ‘If’, ‘FIA’, ‘Aye’, ‘Skelewu’, ‘Fem’ and ‘Unavailable’.

Odunlade Adekola 

Though an alumnus of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, where he obtained a National Diploma, a popular actor, Odunlade Adekola, returned to the University of Lagos where he studied Business Administration, and graduated in May 2018.

Speaking about his experience as a celebrity student, he had told Sunday PUNCH, “As a popular person, there were times that fans gushed over me while I was in school, but I always tried my best to manage the attention, so that it would not distract me or other students.

“I always encouraged my colleagues to see me as one of them, and I related with all of them well.”

Born on December 31, 1976, Adekola gained popularity for his roles in movies such as, ‘Asiri Gomina Wa’, ‘Jagun Jagun’, ‘Orisa’, ‘Sunday Dagboru’, ‘Elesin Oba’, ‘Arinola’, ‘King of Thieves’ and ‘Sammu Alajo’.

He is also the founder of the Odunlade Adekola Film Production.Related News

Helen Paul 

Helen Paul gained fame for her comic character, ‘Tatafo’ on the radio show, ‘Wetin Dey’ on Radio Continental 102.3FM, Lagos. Her funny way of talking like a child about social issues endeared her to many fans.

In 2019, she obtained a doctorate in Theatre Arts from the University of Lagos, and dedicated the degree to her mother. In 2022, she was announced as the HOD of the Arts, Music, and Entertainment Department at Heart International University in the United States of America.


A popular singer and songwriter, Divine Ikubor, aka Rema, gained admission to study Creative Arts at the University of Lagos in 2022. Speaking in an interview with a media personality, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, on Channels Television, he also revealed that he chose to study at UNILAG because he was mostly based in Lagos.

Rema gained recognition with the release of his song ‘Dumebi’ in 2019. The Edo State-born artiste is signed to Mavin Records. In 2022, his hit song with Selena Gomez, ‘Calm Down remix’, set a record after it topped the U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart for 58 weeks.

DJ Cuppy

Florence Otedola, aka DJ Cuppy, is another entertainer who is evidently passionate about continuously acquiring knowledge. Since she started her career as a DJ and musician, she has returned to school twice for Master’s degrees.

Cuppy, who is a daughter to billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola, completed her second Master’s programme in African Studies at the prestigious University of Oxford in the United Kingdom in 2022.

Before then, she had bagged another Master’s degree in Music Business from New York University, USA, in 2015.

She had earlier bagged a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Economics from King’s College, London, UK, in 2014.

Muyideen Oladapo

An actor, Muyideen Oladapo, popularly known as Lala, took many by surprise when pictures of his convocation at the University of Lagos went viral on the internet. The actor had bagged a Master’s degree in Theatre Arts in January 2022.

Speaking about his experience in school, he had told Saturday Beats at the time that though it wasn’t a tea party, he was not discouraged. He said, “The process was tough, because it was not easy for me. I initially wanted to enroll for a Master’s degree in 2018, but I did not pass the entrance examination. However, I was not discouraged, and I tried again in 2019. As God would have it, I passed the entrance examination and the rest is history. I have never been discouraged, even when I returned to secondary school as an adult.”

Born on January 28, 1970, in Osogbo, Osun State, Oladapo is a movie director and actor who has starred in many films, including ‘Ekuro’, ‘Atona’ and ‘Omo University’.

He bagged his first degree in Theatre Arts from the Obafemi Awolowo University in 2015.

Abiola Adebayo

The joy that an actress, Abiola Adebayo, felt was evident when she bagged a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Lagos in 2021.

Recalling her rough background, Adebayo revealed that she had to drop out of secondary school. She wrote on Instagram, “Convocation at last. A street hawker, a secondary school dropout, then, a graduate. I am now a proud Master’s degree holder. Combining my master’s programme with work was one of the most difficult things that had ever happened to me; but in all, I have victory.”

She had earlier obtained her Bachelor’s degree in International Relations also from the University of Lagos.

The actress started her career when she was still in her 20s and has featured in many movies and TV series, including ‘Superstory’ and ‘Papa Ajasco’.
